Introduction

This assignment has three questions. The first two questions are based on the scenario described below. The third question is linked to a group activity that your tutor will initiate during your study of this module. The final question asks you to reflect upon the activities of this module and the small group work.

In designated parts of each question, marks will also be awarded for good communication skills; that is, for the structure, style, grammar, punctuation and spelling.

When you complete the assignment, compress all relevant files into one single compressed file. This file should be submitted through the AOU's Learning Management System (AOULMS). Online discussions related to this assignment should be posted in the forums labelled Forum. If this forum doesn't exist in the course main page, then contact your tutor so this forum is made available.

Note the following important points about this assignment:

• The weighting of this assignment is 6%.
• The cut-off date is Dec 29, 2018.
• This assignment assumes BB513 is offered through Moodle.
• The assignment assumes the use of a special forum called Forum.

Scenario for use in Questions 1 and 2

Arabia Virtual University (AVU) is going to operate from Lebanon as a head quarter and offer distance learning for all Arab countries. All the courses are offered online but, the students can attend some of their classes via video conferencing, this will be called virtual classes/tutorials. All what a student needs is a PC connected to the internet, a video camera and a microphone. The students have to attend at least 20% of the virtual tutorials of each course.

The AVU will start within one year from now. This is because they have hired two development teams, one is working on developing an online learning management system in order to offer all the courses online and the other team is working on developing a web-based application for video conferencing to be used for virtual classes.

The AVU has one computer lab with 10 workstations that is used by the systems development team who are working on the development of the online learning management system. We will call this team the system team.

The AVU has a second powerful workstations lab (also 10 computers) used by the team who is working on the video conferencing web-based application. Each workstation in this lab is equipped with audio/video editing software. We will call this team the multimedia team. This lab will initially share the printer with the other development team.

One floor is dedicated for the virtual classes. This floor is composed of eight well-isolated rooms. Each room is equipped with a powerful workstation with a high resolution camera and a microphone attached to the computer. The computers are intended to be used by the tutors of the virtual classes.

In addition to the computer labs, the AVU administration uses the company's network for accounting, secretarial support and the production of some advertising material. There are 3 workstations in the administration office. The workstations used for financial applications have its own modem link to the bank enabling direct transfer of funds.
All AVU workstations have Internet and email access. The Internet is accessed by a router connected to an ADSL line with 512 Kbit/s bandwidth. At present, most Internet access is by general systems labs, but the multimedia lab is expected to increase the load on the service, especially to deliver real-time interactive audio/video data in the testing phase as well as soon as the virtual classes start. Moreover the multimedia lab will provide the system team with streaming stored audio/video files for each tutorial. It is anticipated that there may be a need to review Internet access.

Because the head quarter has been chosen to be located in Lebanon all the systems will be hosted in Lebanon. The network will be hosted in a single building and will be as follows:
Both development teams are on the same floor. All the administration team is located on the same floor over the floor of the development teams. And the third floor is dedicated for the virtual classes.

AVU currently has 3 servers, one for the learning management system (LMS server), one for administration (admin and finance server), and one for email server (email server). It is planned to invest in an additional server (multimedia server) for the virtual classes that support video conferencing. The learning management server will be used to host LMS system that provides online courses (as mentioned above each tutorial will have its streaming stored audio/video files). The email server manages emails for AVU staff as well as for AVU students, and the multimedia server manages the real-time interactive audio/video traffic during the virtual classes.

You have been invited to act as a consultant to AVU to assist them in making the appropriate purchases of new equipment and in redesigning the network so as to support the new courses and virtual classes. AVU has asked for the following:

- A report assessing how the company's Internet access needs might be most appropriately met in the future, especially with the multimedia traffic produced by the virtual classes and the online courses. You should take into consideration that real-time interactive audio/video application (used for virtual classes) is delay sensitive while streaming stored audio/video (part of the online courses) can tolerates longer delays. AVU understands it is possible to use an Internet cache and they want to know more about how this might work within their setting. AVU is also considering alternative ways of accessing the Internet, but are not sure which method will be most cost effective and offer most future proofing if the courses develop further. In the light of recent news reports about Internet viruses, AVU is also concerned to ensure the security of its network.

- A design for the new network plus a simulation of traffic flows on the network.

- A description of how you planned your design, indicating any further aspects AVU should consider to ensure network security and expansion.

In a formal request, AVU has sent you the following letter to indicate the anticipated system usage:

From: AVU
To: BB513 students
Re: Planned changes to network resulting from changes in Curriculum

Thank you for your interest in providing us with consultancy services in relation to our planned network changes. As you know, we wish to update our network facilities for our studnets and staff following the decision to broaden our activities. We will be interested in your observations on appropriate specifications for the new equipment and how we might most appropriately secure the Internet. In particular, we are interested in your views on the most appropriate design for the new network.

AVU network has two main functions, to support AVU administration/staff and to support AVU students with online courses as well as with virtual classes. Following previous advice, we have not got separate students and administrative networks, but use network security to protect the administrative areas from students. I have indicated below the network usage by function.

Administration and Finance: The finance officer has a direct modem link to the Bank for the purposes of transferring money between accounts and making BACS payments to our suppliers. This link is used once or twice a day and the file sizes are small. Both Administration and Finance staff make considerable use of the email facilities. Email access averages medium sized files sent every 10 minutes. Although staff have web access, the use of this facility is negligible. The Finance and Administrative staff share a printer. The Finance Officer prints a large file on average every 30 minutes. The administrative staff (2) each print a large file on average every 10 minutes. They frequently (every 2 minutes on average) access AVU database held on the Administration application server to upload medium files. The finance officer generates a medium file every 5 minutes.

System lab: Employees in this lab access the Network to download or upload an enormous file each hour. It is anticipated that they will also need to download large files from the Internet every two hours. Each employee prints a large file every 2 hours. Email access averages small files every 10 minutes.

Multimedia lab: We anticipate each employee in this lab will generate a gigantic file every 30 minutes. On average an enormous file will be downloaded from the Internet every 2 hours. A medium sized file will be printed every 30 minutes. Email access is anticipated to average a small file every 30 minutes. The traffic from this lab will increase as soon as they starts testing their video conferencing web-based application.

Students: We are targeting 2000 thousand students in the first year and 1000 new students each year after. Each student will have an e-mail. Each student will be registered in two courses in the average; this means two tutorials per week. In the worst case the student will attend two virtual tutorials per week, browse two tutorials and eventually watch their videos. Email access averages small files every 2 hours.

Tutors: Each tutor will have an e-mail. Each tutor will have two tutorials a day. We have at most 8 tutorials running concurrently. And 15 students at most will attend a single virtual tutorial. Our tutorials will be offered from 8:00 AM to 10:00PM.

Accommodation: The servers and routers are housed together in a room with fire prevention precautions. I am attaching a diagram of the layout of the computer suites and offices.

I think I have provided you with enough information. I look forward to receiving your proposal by the agreed date.

Question 1 (35 marks)

Write a short formal report of no more than 1000 words as requested by AVU. Entitle your report “Internet Access Options for AVU”. Your report should assess how AVU’s Internet access needs might be most appropriately met in the future, especially with real-time interactive audio/video traffic (virtual classes) and streaming stored audio/video files (for online courses).

The structure for this report is described in the notes for this question.

State the total number of words you have used at the end of your answer. Where you use any quotations or pictures (including diagrams), supply a list of the references under the heading ‘References’ at the end. Under the heading ‘Bibliography’ give a list of all the sources other than course materials that you have drawn on in your answer but not quoted directly. You will be penalised if you do not do these three things. You will also be penalised if you do not keep within the given word count.

Question 2 (40 marks)

Read the scenario and then take on the role of the consultant, design and test, using the OU LAN simulator, a plan of a local area network appropriate to support the new developments.

Your tasks for this question are as follows:

Part 1
Using the information in the scenario, complete OU LAN simulator planning sheets for the proposed network upgrade. You will find copies of the planning sheets in the Workbook section of your Journal.

Part 2
Use the OU LAN simulator to design and test your network. AVU has stipulated that no more than 3 bridges should be used in your design.

Part 3
Write a brief discussion of your design methodology. You should describe how you achieved your design, emphasising any strengths and/or weaknesses of your design, and explaining why you have adopted your particular configuration of network elements.

Your discussion should be 300 to 400 words in length, but there is no penalty associated with writing more or less than this.

Question 3 (25 marks)

The activity starts when your tutor gives you a time frame for the activity in Forum.

The task for this activity will involve your group in collaborating to compile an overview of the way you see people and organizations using technologies for networking.

The task

The material in Book M outlines the wider implications of networking and sketches out some of the ways technology is being used to build networks in organisations and elsewhere. It also has a number of diagrams and charts illustrating different ways of depicting networking activities. For this online activity you need to both post individual messages and work together to summarise information collected by members of your group.

(b) Post a message indicating what you think motivates people to participate in online networks or use technology for networking.
(c) Comment on some of the observations.
(d) Use the Internet to identify the various ways people are now using it to create networks or network with others and post up your findings in the group.
(e) Working together, compile a summary of this information you have collected that illustrates the range of Interne-based networks you have identified.

For Question 3

When you have completed the activity for the TMA submission you should:

(a) Provide a diagram or chart illustrating the network of message threads between the students in your group for example who started, who responded to whom and so forth – a chart of the connections you see looking over Forum discussions. The role you took in this should be part of this diagram. (8 marks)
(b) Write an account that covers these issues:
• How effective you think your group was in carrying out the task?
• Suggest 3 ‘rules’ that you think would improve the online group work for the collaborative activity you will be undertaking during the next Module. (6 marks)

You have now taken part in several online group tasks in this and the other 2 modules.

(c) Write an short account covering what you particularly like about working in this way and what do you find difficult with this way of working and what alternative actions (if any) you might you take next time you are asked to work with others in this course? (9 marks)
(d) Structure, style, grammar, punctuation and spelling (2 marks)

(parts b and c should amount to around 500 words but there is no penalty if you want to write more than this)

Notes to help you answer TMA

Question 1

This part of the assignment gives you the opportunity to develop and demonstrate your skills in working with third party materials. You will need to do some research using the Web and the OU on-line library to produce a report on a technical topic for use by non-technical people. You may find discussion in Forum helpful. Your report should demonstrate your understanding of:

- how caching works
- alternative methods of connecting to the Internet
- how to secure a network from external threats

AVU brief is contained in the scenario and is reproduced here for your convenience:

“AVU understands it is possible to use an Internet cache and they want to know more about how this might work within the company's setting. They are also considering alternative ways of accessing the Internet, especially for real time video conferencing and stored streaming audio/video files.. In the light of recent news reports about Internet viruses, they are also concerned to ensure the security of AVU's network.”

You should structure your report using the guidelines from Section 2 of Book W, Report Writing. This means starting with an introduction, where you set the scene for the report without going into too much detail. This is followed by the main body, which covers the points you consider important to the topic. You should include at least two correctly referenced quotations in this section as evidence to support the points you are covering. Then write your conclusion, which summarises the main points and provides a recommendation. Finally, you should include references (and bibliography, etc) as supplementary material. Your report will be assessed against the following criteria:

Criterion Marks
Is the content of the report appropriate to the audience and purpose?
That is:
is the choice of content and quotations appropriate?
are the quotations suitably referenced?
is the report factually accurate?
have you demonstrated an understanding of the technology and the issues? 17 marks
Are the style and technical level appropriate to the audience and purpose? 6 marks
Is the report well structured for the audience and purpose?
That is:
does it have an appropriate introduction, main body and conclusion?
is the content presented in an appropriate order with concerns separated? 6 marks
Are there any errors in English?
That is:
are there any grammatical, punctuation or spelling errors, or words that have been used incorrectly or inappropriately? 6 marks

Question 2

This question provides you with an opportunity to demonstrate your understanding of each of the following:

- analysis of a third-party specification
- the conversion of a paper analysis to a practical design
- the interpretation of the results taken from running simulations of the design
- the review of a design activity.

Part 1
You will find examples of how to produce planning sheets for the user-types from Book E, Experiments using network simulation, especially in the case study on Waltonsoft.com. It is important, when simulating, a network to ensure that all the user types are configured so that they generate the expected levels of network traffic. Paper copies of planning sheets are in your Journal.

Part 2
Here you are expected to use the OU LAN simulator to plan and test your design for the network. Again Book E will assist you in this exercise. Keep your plan as simple as possible. Take care when transferring the user-type configuration information from the planning sheets of Part 1 to the simulator. Remember to save your work regularly when using the simulator. Include in your answer a printout of your final design plus a floppy disk with a copy of your simulator file.

Part 3
This part is a short discussion explaining how your achieved your design. Give the reasons why you planned the design as you did and say why you used particular network elements. Identify any short-comings you see in your plan, such as potential bottlenecks and comment on any changes you would make if you were not subject to the limitations of the OU LAN simulator.

Your work will be assessed against the following criteria:
Criterion Marks
Is the content of the planning sheets appropriate to meet the requirements of AVU? 8 marks
Do the results from running the simulator demonstrate:
that the network plan matches the planning sheets
that the network plan is viable 17 marks
Is the content of the discussion demonstrating:
the reasons for your choice of a particular plan?
the strengths and/or weaknesses of your design?
freedom from grammatical, punctuation or spelling errors or words that have been used incorrectly or inappropriately? 15 marks

Question 3

In book M you read that one benefit of using computer networks is the ability to work as part of a group or team even when the members are remotely situated from each other. In this activity, your group will explore the impact of networking technologies on your communications, how you network and what you think are the advantages and disadvantages of technology based networks.

For this activity to be successful a degree of co-operation from all the members of your group will be required. The task also looks forward to the next part of the course where, in module 4, you will again be working collaboratively. You may well want to change some aspects of collaborative working for the next Module in the light of your experiences so far and this gives you the opportunity to say how you would like to change your ways of working within the group. You will probably be staying in the same group for Module 4 (depending on your tutor’s decisions) so a good start for the group here will help you all successfully complete the next online task where an important proportion of your TMA marks will be a ‘group’ mark, as well as individual marks. If you do not take a reasonable part in this activity you will not be able to properly respond to the questions set for this section.

3(a) - You may draw this any way you wish but you may find some of the examples in Book M useful.

Criterion Marks
A chart or diagram of the discussion flow in TMA Forum. Make sure that your tutor can clearly see you in this ‘network’. 8 marks
Comments on effectiveness of the group
3 ‘rules’ to improve the online group
